Niagara Wheatfield Goes 3-1 At Cheektowaga Duals, Takes 3rd

The Falcons, still without three starters, went 3-1 at the Cheektowaga dual tournament on Saturday, December 12th, to claim third place. The Falcons defeated Lackawanna (55-17) and St. Joe’s (60-12) before falling to state ranked Palmyra-Macedon from Section V (40-25). Wheatfield then dominated Cheektowaga (60-22) to claim third place.

Five Niagara-Wheatfield wrestlers went undefeated, Marcus Kopp (96 pounds), Joe Malvestuto (130), Angelo Malvestuto (189), Adam Donner (215) and Jim Donner (285).

NIagara Wheatfield is next back in action on Wednesday, December 16th, hosting North Tonawanda at the Falcons gym.

In junior varsity action, the Falcons had four champions at the Silver Creek Tournament: Brad Limina (103), Derrick Printup (112), Anthony Wiseman (152) and Nolan Smith (285). Justin Phillips placed second at 189.

Marcus Popp (97), Joe Malvestuto (131 & 136), Angelo Malvestuto (190), Adam Donner (216) and Jim Donner (286) went undefeated for NW at the Cheektowaga Duals.

NIagara Wheatfield Handles Short Staffed
NT 71-12

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons improved their NFL record to 3-0 Wednesday night with a lop-sided 71-12 victory over the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks.

Joe Tardibuono at 103 and Dean Venturin at 112 picked up decisions for the Falcons while Jake Kelly had a pin at 171 lbs. Ten other Falcons received forfeits against the under-manned Lumberjacks.

The Falcons are back in action Friday and Saturday in Jamestown for the annual STOWA tournament.

Angelo Malvestuto Claims 189 lb. Crown





The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons had one champion and seven place finishers at the annual Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Tournament held in Jamestown.

Senior captain Angelo Malvestuto won his championship match 14-7 at 189 lbs. to claim his third consecutive STWOA crown.

Taking second place for the Falcons was senior captain Jim Donner at 285 lbs, dropping a 1-0 decision in the finals. Marcus Popp took 4th at 96, Anthony Tardibuono took 6th at 103, Antonio Ventry took seventh at 152, Alex Ventry took 8th at 160, Jake Kelly took 6th at 171 and Adam Donner took 5th at 215.

The Falcons finished in 4th place, but was the top Section Six school in the 32 team tournament. Chinango Forks won the team title with Ridgeway of Pennsylvania taking second, Spencerport of Section Five took third, NW 4th and Portville took fifth place.

The Falcons are now off for the Christmas holiday and return to action on January 2nd & 3rd at the prestigious Union Endicott duals.

The Falcons Go 1-3 at UE Duals

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons won their final match of the day 29-28 over Sayville to finish with a 1-3 record for the weekend. The finish put NW in 11th place among the 12 participating teams. Undeated for NW over the weekend were Joe Malvestuto, Jake Kelly and Angelo Malvestuto.

The Falcons dropped a 51-15 decision against number one ranked Spencerport to open the meet.

In the second match Wheatfield lost 38-27 against MacArthur of Section XI and then this morning was defeated by Fulton of Section III 41-18.


Falcons Rally To Defeat Rival  Lew-Port Lancers 45-31
The NW Falcons found themselves in an unusual position Wednesday night in the NW gym, trailing NFL opponent Lew-port after eight matches, but Joe Tardibuono's OT victory at 147 lbs sparked Wheatfield to a hard fought 45-31 victory. Winning by pins for NW were Marcus Popp at 98 lbs, Angelo Schildauer at 142 lbs, Antonio Ventry at 154 lbs, Jake Kelly at 173 lbs, Angelo Malvestuto at 191 lbs and Jim Donner at 287 lbs. Winning key decisions for NW were Dean Venturin at 114lbs, Joe Malvestuto at 132 lbs and Joe Tardibuono at the 147 lb match.

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons re-claimed the NFWOA Tournament Championship Saturday night at the NCCC gym, running away with six wrestlers in the finals and three chmapionships. Winning NFWOA crowns for the Falcons were Jake Kelly at 175 lbs, Angelo Malvestuto at 193 lbs and Jim Donner at 289 lbs. Taking second place finishes for NW were Rick  Schweickhard at 107 lbs, Joe Malvestuto at 129 lbs and Adam Donner at 219 lbs. Joe Malvestuto injured his shoulder in a semi-final win and was held out of the finals and Adam Donner injured his shoulder in the scoreless finals match and took an injury default.

Taking third place finishes for NW were Marcus Popp at 100 lbs and Zach Antone at 164 lbs.

Angelo Malvestuto won the MOW Award for the 2nd Consecutive year and Rick Schweickhard won the Over-achiever award for taking 2nd as an unseeded wrestler.

Falcons Down Grand Island
49-24 on Senior Night

The Niagara Wheatfield wrestling Falcons defeated Grand Island 49-24 at home on Senior Night, despite missing despite missing six starters. Winning by fall for NW were Seniors Antonio Ventry at 162 lbs and Zach Antone at 173 lbs. Winning by decision were Marcus Popp at 98 lbs, Dean Venturin at 114 lbs, Dan Koshinski at 132 lbs and Joe Tardibuono at 142 lbs. NW also received four victories by forfeits. The NW JV will be in action this weekend at the Lockport Tournament while the Varsity has the weekend off.

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons rallied from a 23-8 deficit to defeat rival Niagara Falls 39-29 in a packed Wolverina. The critical matches of the night were Adam Donner's triple overtime sudden death victory over Billy Gee at 217 lbs and Marcus Popp moving up to 105 lbs to defeat Jemone Carter. Other victories for NW included Dean Venturin at 114 lbs, Joe Malvestuto with a tech fall at 127 lbs, Angelo Schildauer with a key win at 132 lbs, Jake Kelly picking up a major decision at 173 lbs, Angelo Malvestuto with a first period pin at 191 lbs and Jim Donner with a quick pin at 287 lbs.

The Falcons can now clinch the NFL Championship for the sixth straight year next Wednesday at Lockport.

With 44-28 Victory Over Lockport

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons won their sixth consecutive Niagara Frontier League Championship at Lockport Wednesday night, downing the host Lions 44-28.

Despite a very strong performance by the host Lions, wrestling in front of their home crowd on Senior Night and with a LCTV television crew taping all of the action, Wheatfield's big guns came through again, including the three senior captains Antonio Ventry, Angelo Malvestuto and Jim Donner.

The Falcons picked up pins from Joe Malvestuto at 127 lbs, Antonio Ventry at 162 lbs, Angelo Malvestuto at 191 lbs and Jim Donner at 287 lbs. Anthony Tardibuono won a convincing victory at 105 lbs, Sr. Angelo Schildauer had a major decision at 137 lbs, Joe Tardibuono pulled out an important one point decision at 147 lbs and Jake Kelly rallied from  a deficit to come on strong with a lopsided win at 173 lbs. Adam Donner received a forfeit at 217 lbs.

The Falcons travel to Salamanca on Friday, February 29th for a tough two day tournament featuring several ranked New York state teams.

Angelo Malvestuto Wins MOW & Aggregate Pin Award

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons picked up yet another significant tournament victory in Salamanca Saturday night, January 30th, claiming the Salamanca Tournament Championship. The Falcons finished ahead of Section Five power Wayne and Pal Mac, although Pal Mac was without two of their top wrestlers. Still, the Falcons topped 23 other teams from throughout the southern tier, northwest Pennsylvania and the Rochester area.

Winning crowns for NW were Joe Malvestuto at 129 lbs, Angelo Malvestuto at 193 lbs and Jim Donner winning at 289 lbs. For Angelo Malvestuto it was a big night as he also claimed the Aggregate Pin Award and the tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. It was the second MOW for Malvestuto this season.

Placing 3rd for NW was Marcus Popp at 100 lbs and Zach Antone who had a very strong tourney taking 3rd at 164 lbs. Taking fourth was Dean Swanson at 129 lbs, Antonio Ventry at 164 and Adam Donner at 219lbs.

Falcons Have Five Wrestlers Claim 4A Crowns
Falcons Finish 2nd, 10.5 Points Behind Clarence

The Niagara Wheatfield Falcons had five individual Champions at the 4A tournament held at Ken West on Saturday, February 6.

Winning Class AAAA Championships for NW were Joe Malvestuto with a dramatic pin at 127, Jake Kelly with a decision at 173, Angelo Malvestuto with another over-powering performance pinning all four opponents in the  first period, Adam Donner with an exciting OT victory at 217 and Jim Donner winning a decision at 287 lbs.

The Falcons had six place finishers, Marcus Popp taking 4th at 98, Dean Swanson a 5th at 127, Angelo Schildauer a 4th at 132, Zech Antone 6th at 162, Antonio Ventry a 3rd at 162 and Max Antone took 3rd at 287lbs.

NW was edged out of the team championship by Clarence 219.5 to 209, but will send 9 wrestlers to

Going To States!
Brothers Joe and Angelo Malvestuto and Jim Donner earned a trip to the New York State High School Wrestling Championships In Albany Friday night by claiming Section Six Championships. Joe Malvestuto defeated top seed Ben Mikac of WE in ot for his 3rd Section Six title, brother Angelo Malvestuto pinned MP Joseph also of Williamsville East to win his 4th Section Six crown and Jim Donner decisioned Mike Fraterrigo of Ken East to earn his 2nd trip to States.

A Meeting Of The Champs!

Niagara Wheatfield's newest State wrestling champion, Angelo Malvestuto, had an opportunity to meet fellow NW State Champion Bob Sloand (1972) at the 6th annual WNY Wrestling Coaches Association awards banquet at the Wooodlawn Firehall in Blasdell on Sunday March 7th. Bob Sloand was inducted into the WNY Wrestling Coaches Association at the dinner for his great career at Niagara Wheatfield as a State Champ and three time finalist as well as a division I All-American at Lehigh University. Sloand is a 1973 graduate of NW.



2010 Season Video Highlights
On Tuesday night, April 6th, Angelo Malvestuto was honored by the Niagara County Legislature at their monthly meeting in Lockport. Angelo received a placque which aknolwdeged his outstanding career as well as winning the New York State Championship. Angelo was accompanied by his mother Karen and Coach Rick Sweney. The placque was read by Legislature John D. Ceretto  after Angelo was introduced by County Legislature Chairman Bill Ross, NW's former Athletic Director. 

Niagara Wheatfield Wrestling Team & Angelo Malvestuto Honored by NW Board of Ed & Niagara County Legislature
The Niagara Wheatfield wrestling team and Angelo Malvestuto were honored by the Niagara Wheatfield Board of Education Wednesday night, April 7th. Superintendent Carl Militello and Board President Michele Hoerner presented Malvestuto and Coach Rick Sweney with a placque acknowledging Malvestuto's State Championship and the team's Championship season.

DiPaolo Scholarship Awards
Angelo Malvestuto and Jim Donner received individual scholarships from the DiPaolo Scholarship Fund on Thursday, May 27th at DiPaolo's Restuarant in Blasdell. Malvestuto received the "Destroyer Award" which goes to the finest nominated wrestler. Donner received the "Cauliflower Alley" Club Award which goes to a wrestler with all-around athletic and scholastic excellence.
